STRONGER

Rottweiler's are often in the news, usually portrayed as dangerous, aggressive dogs. They are feared by some and despised by others, but those of us who are lucky enough to have one or more Rottweiler as a companion know the truth of how gentle, loyal, loving and affectionate these dogs really are.

Several months after she joined the family, it became obvious that Karli's breeder was interested in only one thing - money. Karli was from her mother's first litter, and before she was even six months old Crystal, her mother, had delivered her second litter. Because Crystal was weak, the puppies had to be delivered by c-section and this meant she was no longer suitable for breeding - according to rumour, the poor girl ended up being a junkyard guard dog.

Although Karli's breeder wasn't everything he should have been, temperament wise - I could not have asked for a better dog. Karli has always been well behaved, she thoroughly enjoyed her training lessons and was a quick learner.

Unfortunately, Karli hasn't been so lucky physically. She has been plagued by food allergies since a young age, had repeated bladder infections and has suffered with orthopedic (bone related) problems. I make her as comfortable as I can, but we cherish every day as there is no way of knowing how much longer she will be here.

March 9 2003

On the evening of February 11 2003, Karli was in a lot more pain than usual - the only place that wasn't obviously hurting was the top of her head. She had an uncomfortable night and was no better the next morning. The only thing that showed in her eyes was pain... I called my vet and arranged to take Karli to be put to sleep that afternoon.

A couple of hours before she was due to be put to sleep, Karli seemed to pick up slightly. I delayed the vet trip in the hope that she would feel better, luckily she did. Karli is still in pain, but she is happy so for now she will stay with me.

Karli's main problem is rheumatoid arthritis, my vet agrees that all I can do is keep her comfortable until there are more bad days than good. That's what I'm doing.

I found a natural remedy, Starflower Oil, that relieves a lot of Karli's pain and for a few days I was optimistic, but then it became apparent that Starflower Oil badly upsets Karli's digestive system. I can't keep her on it regularly because of the upset it causes, but will give her a dose when she really needs it.
